Dear Friends,

Earlier, I read this quote by Martin Luther King: “We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope.” This quote encapsulates the idea of maintaining a resilient and optimistic spirit in the face of setbacks, emphasizing that while difficulties are inevitable, they do not diminish the ultimate possibility of a better future.

This Sunday marks my first anniversary since my appointment to Baulkham Hills. 365 days full of labor and sweat, which also required endurance and perseverance from me. I was raised not to complain, but just to do what I was called to complete. To be honest, the road is still very long and there will be times of challenges ahead.

St Paul’s quote: “Hope does not disappoint because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:5) gives me courage because it explains that this kind of hope, unlike secular wishes, does not fail because it is grounded in the enduring love of God, which is made available to believers through the Holy Spirit. This Christian hope is a confident expectation of future realities, sustained by God’s faithfulness even amidst suffering and challenges.

Let us pray for one another that we may not be tempted to give
up prematurely and run away from the responsibilities.

After the completion of the financial audit report for 2024/2025, I now want to publish it. The report has already been sent by email, and a hard copy is attached to the noticeboard. Overall, we can say that financially we have survived the year 2024/2025 well. We have bridged the large deficit of 2023/2024 and even made a profit. This is also necessary, as we still must pay off the purchase of the carpet and the debts that have been accumulated over the past eight years. We are moving in the right direction and are on the way to financial stability. At this point I would like to thank the Finance Committee for their support and guidance.

Perhaps you can still remember the recent parish census. Steve Harrison has now evaluated, categorized and interpreted the data. The report gives us reason for hope. The parish has grown in the last 10 years. Almost every second new arrival is from overseas. Our parish has thus become very multicultural. Our parish will also benefit from this. At the same time, we face major challenges. The parish is still largely financed by parishioners over 60. The other challenge is the fact that the age group 16-35 is underrepresented in our parish. There are many reasons for this. Therefore, it is important that we focus on adolescents and young adults. For this purpose, we have now launched the youth program “Faith in the Future” led by Zali Turner and Adam Chioatto. You can find more details in this bulletin.

We will also be working with Parramatta Mission to set up an outreach program for our parish. The mission does a lot for the homeless and struggling members of our community, they not only provide food and clothing, but they also run community days and connect struggling members of the community with social services and housing programs. The intention is to give our parish an “outward looking” mission in caring for our local communities as well. This way, we become the hands and faces of Jesus to those who are in need and who are not necessarily our parish “clients”.

Hope does not disappoint because hope can lead to endurance, proven character and to encourage people to be “pilgrims of hope,” journeying with Christ and supporting one another, reflecting the unwavering nature of divine love.

Have a wonderful weekend

Fr Joe

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Entrance Antiphon

Within your will, O Lord, all things are established, and there is none that can resist your will. For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth, and all that is held within the circle of heaven; you are the Lord of all.

First Reading                                          Hab 1:2-3, 2:2-4

How long, Lord, am I to cry for help while you will not listen;

to cry ‘Oppression!’ in your ear and you will not save?

Why do you set injustice before me,

why do you look on where there is tyranny?

Outrage and violence, this is all I see,

all is contention, and discord flourishes. Then the Lord answered and said,

‘Write the vision down, inscribe it on tablets

to be easily read,

since this vision is for its own time only:

eager for its own fulfilment, it does not deceive; if it comes slowly, wait,

for come it will, without fail.

See how he flags, he whose soul is not at rights,

but the upright man will live by his faithfulness.’

Responsorial Psalm
  • If today you hear his voice, harden not your
    1. Come, ring out our joy to the Lord; hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him, giving thanks, with songs let us hail the Lord. (R.)
    2. Come in; let us bow and bend low; let us kneel before the God who made us for he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture, the flock that is led by his hand. (R.)
    3. O that today you would listen to his voice! ‘Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the desert when your fathers put me to the test; when they tried me, though they saw my work.’ (R.)
Second Reading                                   2 Tim 1:6-8, 13-14

I am reminding you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I laid my hands on you. God’s gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love, and self-control.  So  you  are  never  to  be  ashamed  of

witnessing to the Lord, or ashamed of me for being his prisoner; but with me, bear the hardships for the sake of the Good News, relying on the power of God.
Keep as your pattern the sound teaching you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. You have been trusted to look after something precious; guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia!
The word of the Lord stands for ever; it is the word given to you, the Good News.
Alleluia!

Gospel                                                              Lk 17:5-9

The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith.’ The Lord replied, ‘Were your faith the size of a mustard seed you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea”, and it would obey you.

‘Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, “Come and have your meal immediately”? Would he not be more likely to say, “Get my supper laid; make yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink yourself afterwards”? Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, “We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty.”’

Communion Antiphon

The Lord is good to those who hope in him, to the soul that seeks him.

Faith and the Future of St Michael’s Parish Youth Ministry 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time – 5 October 2025

This Sunday’s Readings challenge us to look at faith. Faith is not something we measure or keep for ourselves, but a living flame to be nurtured, shared, and lived out in service.

If this is true, then we must ask, what does this mean for the faith of our young people, here and now? The Readings, Prayers, and antiphons highlight to us: Faith as Gift and Trust in God – In the Entrance Antiphon, Esther reminds us to rely on God’s mercy, not our own strength. How can we help our young people discover that faith is a relationship of trust and mercy, not a checklist of answers? Faith in Times of Struggle – From the First Reading, Habakkuk’s cry, “How long, Lord?” echoes the questions our youth ask about justice, identity, and belonging.

Are we willing to walk with them in their struggles and doubts, showing them that faith is not the absence of questions, but choosing to remain with God through them? Faith in Communion and Belonging – The Psalm reminds us not to harden our hearts, and the communion antiphon teaches that, though we are many, we are one body, as Paul instructs. How do we ensure our youth know they truly belong at the heart of the parish, especially at the Eucharistic table?

Faith as a Flame to be Nurtured – St Paul urges Timothy to “fan into a flame the gift of God.” What role can we play in fanning that flame in our youth—through mentoring, support, and encouragement—so that their baptismal grace becomes a living fire? Faith in Humble Service – Jesus teaches that even a mustard seed of faith can move mountains, if it expresses itself in service. How can our parish create opportunities for young people to discover their faith through humble acts of service and leadership? An Invitation – St Michael’s Parish Youth Ministry is not just another program. It is our living response to God’s call, to nurture faith as a gift, to walk with our young people in struggles, to fan into flame their Spirit, to lead them into service, and to welcome them as full members of the Body of Christ. The question is not only what will youth ministry do—but what will we, as a parish, do together?

We invite all parishioners to help shape this ministry by completing the Youth Ministry Survey. Your voice and opinions matter, your support matters, and together we can ensure that the flame of faith burns brightly in the hearts of our young people.
