What a busy Parish?

When Bishop Vincent moved me to Baulkham Hills almost a year ago, I had no idea how busy the parish would be. Of course, I knew it was a very large parish, with two primary schools, nursing homes, a hospital, and two churches. I was aware it would be a lot of work.

However, I never imagined it would be this busy. Many events are taking place this week alone: The Alpha program started on Wednesday and attracted around 50 people who gathered to share fellowship and faith. On Monday and Tuesday, parents of 150 children attended the information evening on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Sacramental Program begins next week and will last until the end of the month. Then there were ongoing meetings, such as those of the PFC, PPC, Fete Committee, Old Church Working Committee, school meetings, etc. Then there are funerals, weddings, Masses for the community, nursing homes, schools, and retreat centers. It’s very, very busy!

That’s why I’m so grateful for volunteers. There are many, and there wouldn’t be enough space here to name them all. The measure of a functioning and vibrant parish is the number of volunteers. Without them, the parish would simply collapse. Therefore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who volunteer in the parish and, in turn, for all of us. In addition to volunteers, there are also people who support the parish financially. These are the regular donors who help the parish with their weekly contributions. In addition, there are also generous donors. A parish is a spiritual home, but the building must also be maintained and modernized. That’s why I’m very grateful for the donations, which we will handle very carefully and transparently.

But there are also areas that urgently need new volunteers. I’m thinking especially of catechesis. This area is also very important for the growth of the parish. Many children in public schools have no religious instruction except through the catechesis offered by our catechists. Many have long since completed this mission and are overburdened. I know that there are many bureaucratic hurdles and requirements that volunteers must overcome before they can go to school. However, I am seriously concerned that we will lose many children and parents at state schools if they have no knowledge of faith. What will become of our society if faith knowledge disappears? Then faith will simply disappear from public consciousness.

Pope Leo XIV emphasizes the importance of a living, personal experience of faith in catechesis, encouraging catechists to foster an interpersonal encounter that opens hearts to the Gospel. He highlights the significance of self-reflection and values-based leadership, encouraging leaders to be self-aware and understand diverse perspectives.

Therefore, I would like to invite you to consider whether you want to take on this important mission.

This Sunday, the church building at Our Lady of Lourdes celebrates its 45th anniversary. It was Fr Reilly who oversaw the construction. Yet, it was a community effort, and many volunteers contributed to its completion in 1980. Many may have passed since. Let us pray for the repose of their souls. Those who are still with us, may I thank you for your commitment and generosity. May our community continue to flourish. Ad multos annos!

The parish also thanks the following donors:

  1. Jess Banayos for two brand new Monstrances
  2. 500 AUD for the procurement of Rafle prizes concerning the Fete
  3. Elizabeth Bryant for the purchase of a new computer for Our Lady of Lourdes
  4. Teresita & Brian Smith 400 AUD for St Michael’s church

Have a great Weekend

45th Anniversary of Our Lady of Lourdes church

This Sunday, Our Lady of Lourdes current church celebrates its 45th anniversary. It was opened on 3rd August 1980.

The construction of the church was a community effort, with volunteers, including Jim Vogt, working to build it under the guidance of Fr. Kelly. Eric Parkes collected old convict bricks from the area for the sanctuary wall. The church and auditorium were opened and dedicated by Cardinal James Freeman on August 3, 1980.

We thank all those who have contributed to this wonderful achievement. May we continue their legacy and may our

Lady of Lourdes help us to flourish as a faith community.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Entrance Antiphon

O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me! You are my rescuer, my help; O Lord, do not delay.

First Reading                                                                        Eccl 1:2, 2:21-23

Vanity of vanities, the Preacher says. Vanity of vanities. All is vanity! For so it is that a man who has laboured wisely, skilfully and successfully must leave what is his own to someone who has not toiled for it at all. This, too, is vanity and great injustice; for what does he gain for all the toil and strain that he has undergone under the sun? What of all his laborious days, his cares of office, his restless nights? This, too, is vanity.

Responsorial Psalm

  • In every age, O Lord, you have been our
    1. You turn men back into dust and say: ‘Go back, sons of men.’ To your eyes a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone, no more than a watch in the night. (R.)
    2. You sweep men away like a dream, like grass which springs up in the In the morning it springs up and flowers: by evening it withers and fades. (R.)
    3. Make us know the shortness of our life that we may gain wisdom of heart. Lord, relent! Is your anger for ever? Show pity to your servants. (R.)
    4. In the morning, fill us with your love; we shall exult and rejoice all our days. Let the favour of the Lord be upon us: give success to the work of our hands. (R.)

Second Reading                                                                     Col 3:1-5, 9-11

Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed – and he is your life – you too will be revealed in all your glory with him.

That is why you must kill everything in you that belongs only to earthly life: fornication, impurity, guilty passion, evil desires and especially greed, which is the same thing as worshipping a false god; and never tell each other lies. You have stripped off your old behaviour with your old self, and you have put on a new self which will progress towards true knowledge the more it is renewed in the image of its creator; and in that image there is no room for distinction between Greek and Jew, between the circumcised or the uncircumcised, or between barbarian and Scythian, slave and free man. There is only Christ: he is everything and he is in everything.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!

Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs! Alleluia!

Gospel                                                                                          Lk 12:13-21

A man in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.’ ‘My friend,’ he replied, ‘who appointed me your judge, or the arbitrator of your claims?’ Then he said to them, ‘Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.’

Then he told them a parable: ‘There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself, “What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops.” Then he said, “This is what I will do; I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, have a good time.” But God said to him, “Fool! This very night the demand will be made for your soul; and this hoard of yours, whose will it be then?” So it is when a man stores up treasure for himself in place of making himself rich in the sight of God.’

Communion Antiphon

You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste.

Call for Altar ministers at Our Lady of Lourdes

https://www.parishshare.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bulletin-20250404-2153-parish-of-baulkham-hills-04.png

Altar servers play a vital role in parish liturgy by assisting the priest during Mass and other services, enhancing the reverence and beauty of the celebration. They help facilitate the smooth flow of the Mass, allowing the priest to focus on leading the congregation in prayer. Their actions, such as carrying the cross and candles, presenting the gifts, and ringing the bells, contribute to a more prayerful and engaging experience for the entire assembly.

Would you please consider to join the Team of altar servers at Our Lady of Lourdes?

We are also looking for 2 males to help Madeline to maintain the garden at Our Lady of Lourdes,

Madeline is currently the only one looking after the garden.
