Martha and Maria: What is your Priority?

The Sunday Gospel tells of the sisters Martha and Mary. The former complains about the latter because she does not help her. Jesus finally intervenes and asks the question: what is a necessary action in life?

Perhaps you’re familiar with this game: 10 people are sitting in a dinghy with their luggage, trying to get from a sinking ship to safety. But the load in the boat is too heavy. Everyone is only allowed to keep one thing; the rest must be thrown overboard. What would you keep: a book, an iPhone, a laptop, a Bible, or something else?

What would you want to keep and not give up: family, job, recognition, friends, money, church, faith, your own creativity, health, or…? This question can also be considered when it comes to a congregation or the entire church: money, buildings, the Bible, Jesus, activities, relationships within the groups, etc.

Thank God, we usually don’t need to ask ourselves this question. Most of the time, we can have everything, or very many things, side by side. Everyone acts in their daily life according to a list of priorities that they think are important.

Again, Jesus isn’t saying that our actions are unimportant, but he makes it clear:
If our actions don’t draw their strength from the source of God, if they occur without inner peace and good direction and without a solid foundation, then our actions are pure activism; then we are like drowning people who sink even faster by flailing our hands in panic; then in the end, nothing will remain of our actions, and we ourselves will perish. That’s why Jesus says: “Only one thing is necessary. Mary made the right choice. She chose a good that no one can take away from her.” She allows God to do something, giving Jesus space in her life to work.

With this statement from Jesus, we now come to two questions that each of us must answer for ourselves:
Do I believe Jesus? Do I believe him that, for my challenges, my problems, my family, my future, etc., his work in me is more important than my actions. Or do I not believe him? Do I believe him that I find in him the source, centre, and support for my life, or not? Is he telling the truth or is he lying?

If I believe him, what impact does that have on my life, on how much time I give Jesus so that he can work in my life?

When it comes to time, people get nervous. They often say, “Do you know how much I have to do? I don’t have time for that.” Do we say the same thing when it comes to eating or breathing? How much more should it apply when it comes to spiritual nourishment? That’s why God gave us Sunday as a day of rest. Others think, “Now I have to do even more, one more duty. I can’t do it.” But it’s not about doing more, it’s about letting God do something.

When I was a young pastor, an experienced pastor told me: the more you have to do, the more you need to pray. I didn’t understand it at the time, but now I know he was right.

And I’ve learned that I can then approach my work with more calm and strength and ultimately accomplish more.

Consider for a moment what role does God’s desire to work in and through you play in your time management, and how important do you consider that?

Have a great weekend
Fr Joe

The Renovation of the Old Church

In Sunday’s Gospel, Luke tells of the two sisters, Martha and Mary. Martha is stressed by her many responsibilities. She finds no time to rest.

At the moment, I feel like Martha: so much to do and so little time to pray. I feel more like a manager than a pastor. The many responsibilities of finance, administration, and building maintenance leave me little time for pastoral work.

Therefore, I would like to invite you all to participate in the responsibility for the parish. I urgently need help with the renovation of the Old Church. Perhaps volunteers can be found who would like to share responsibility for the renovation of the Old Church. I urgently need competent people for project management, architecture, and construction who can advise and lead the renovation project. Without your help, this project cannot be realized.

Fr Joe

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Entrance Antiphon

See, I have God for my help. The Lord sustains my soul. I will sacrifice to you with willing heart, and praise your name, O Lord, for it is good.

First Reading Gen 18:1-10

The Lord appeared to Abraham at the Oak of Mamre while he was sitting by the entrance of the tent during the hottest part of the day. He looked up, and there he saw three men standing near him. As soon as he saw them he ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them, and bowed to the ground. ‘My lord,’ he said, ‘I beg you, if I find favour with you, kindly do not pass your servant by. A little water shall be brought; you shall wash your feet and lie down under the tree. Let me fetch a little bread and you shall refresh yourselves before going further. That is why you have come in your servant’s direction.’ They replied, ‘Do as you say.’ Abraham hastened to the tent to find Sarah. ‘Hurry,’ he said, ‘knead three bushels of flour and make loaves.’ Then running to the cattle Abraham took a fine and tender calf and gave it to the servant, who hurried to prepare it. Then taking cream, milk and the calf he had prepared, he laid all before them, and they ate while he remained standing near them under the tree.
‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ they asked him. ‘She is in the tent,’ he replied. Then his guest said, ‘I shall visit you again next year without fail and your wife will then have a son.’

Responsorial Psalm

(R)The just will live in the presence of the Lord.
1.Lord, who shall dwell on your holy mountain? He who walks without fault; he who acts with justice and speaks the truth from his heart; he who does not slander with his tongue. (R.)
2.He who does no wrong to his brother, who casts no slur on his neighbour, who holds the godless in disdain, but honours those who fear the Lord. (R.)
3.He who keeps his pledge, come what may; who takes no interest on a loan and accepts no bribes against the innocent. Such a man will stand firm for ever. (R.)

Second Reading Col 1:24-28

It makes me happy to suffer for you, as I am suffering now, and in my body to do what I can to make up all that has still to be undergone by Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. I became the servant of the

Church when God made me responsible for delivering God’s message to you, the message which was a mystery hidden for generations and centuries and has now been revealed to his saints. It was God’s purpose to reveal it to them and to show all the rich glory of this mystery to pagans. The mystery is Christ among you, your hope of glory: this is the Christ we proclaim, this is the wisdom in which we thoroughly train everyone and instruct everyone, to make them all perfect in Christ.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!
Happy are they who have kept the word with a generous heart and yield a harvest through perseverance.
Alleluia!

Gospel Lk 10:38-42

Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said, ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’

Communion Antiphon

The Lord, the gracious, the merciful, has made a memorial of his wonders; he gives food to those who fear him.

Call for Lawn Mower Volunteers

Our parish is a spiritual home for all of us.

As you are aware, the financial position of our parish is very stretched.

https://www.parishshare.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/bulletin-20250711-2153-parish-of-baulkham-hills-02.png

Given the expected increase in expenses, we need to make savings to remain sustainable.

Currently, we spend around 35K annually for the maintenance of the green space.

Hence, I call for volunteers to help us with the maintenance of our green area for St Michael’s and Our Lady of Lourdes.

If you wish to volunteer, please contact the parish office admin@parishofbaulkhamhills.org.au.

Call for Altar ministers at Our Lady of Lourdes

Altar servers play a vital role in parish liturgy by assisting the priest during Mass and other services, enhancing the reverence and beauty of the celebration. They help facilitate the smooth flow of the Mass, allowing the priest to focus on leading the congregation in prayer. Their actions, such as carrying the cross and candles, presenting the gifts, and ringing the bells, contribute to a more prayerful and engaging experience for the entire assembly.

Would you please consider to join the Team of altar servers at Our Lady of Lourdes?

https://www.parishshare.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Bulletin-–-20250620-–-2153-–-Parish-of-Baulkham-Hills-03.png

ALPHA is an 11-week program where each week we come together on a Wednesday evening to explore a topic tied to the core beliefs of our Faith.

It is not a bible study nor an unpacking of the catechesis. We share a meal, (provided each week by our fabulous catering team), watch a video and have a chat about the things you bring to the table. In other words, we discuss the things that you have been curious about and answer questions you have about our faith. ALPHA is a very enjoyable experience that simply brings people together to explore, connect, share, and enhance our Faith.
