And who is my neighbour?

In one of my favourite snippets in the Scriptures, a lawyer, after receiving from Jesus confirmation that he rightly understood the law’s demand to love “your neighbour as yourself ” (Luke 10:27), sought to justify himself by requesting a definition. “And who is my neighbour?” the lawyer snapped back at Jesus (v. 29). He was asking, in effect, “Whom do I have to love?” The lawyer pressed this question, we’re told, to justify his stinginess of heart. He grasped the seemingly impossible demands of the law of neighbour love, and he understood himself to be on the wrong side of the law unless that law could be shrunk down to size.

The lawyer hoped Christ’s demand that he loves his neighbour wasn’t, as it seemed, a demand to love all his neighbours. Certainly, loving the entire cul-de-sac would be sufficient.

To teach the lawyer, Jesus mentioned the story of the good Samaritan. We all know this story all too well.

The law of love that Christ commended was more than a command to “do no harm” and, if need be, to correct the harm we cause. To love as Jesus commanded is to desire someone else’s good as an end in itself. Christ suggests our obligation to love means we must fix messes we didn’t cause and cure injustices for which we weren’t responsible. Christian love is proactive, affirmative, and interventionist. Christian love jumps in to help.

Now the question is: Why am I the keeper of not only my brother but also my neighbour? It has to do with the fact that we all are made in the image of God! Men and women are made in God’s image (Gen. 1:27–28), so loving God’s image-bearers is like loving God himself. We must love without regard to our definitions of worthiness because worth is determined by God’s having made others in his image.

To love others is to love the Lord himself (Matt. 25:40). Or as the disciple whom Jesus loved put it, “He who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John 4:20).

So, how can we show love to our fellow parishioners. May I suggest the following: 1) We pray for each other. Through prayer, we relate to each other in a deep spiritual way by desiring the best for our fellow parishioners. At Mass, you may turn to your fellow parishioners and offer your prayers to their needs.2) We serve and support each other. We can offer our talents and volunteer in various ministries. Because we cannot be good at everything, we must also reflect on what is most helpful for our fellow human beings in our parish. 3) Honesty, as a core virtue, is essential for a healthy parish life, fostering trust and strong community bonds. It’s about truthfulness in actions and relationships, promoting transparency and accountability within the parish and in its engagement with the wider community. This includes honesty in communication, financial dealings, and personal interactions, all contributing to a more authentic and vibrant parish experience.

To promote honesty in our parish life, Paul Waite and Peter Bolten from the Parish Finance Committee have informed us about the financial state of our parish. We have made good progress, but we still have many hurdles to overcome to become financially sustainable. So, your support is critical for moving forward. If you wish to obtain the report, please contact the parish office.

Also, I am calling for volunteers who can take care of the green space at St Michael’s and Our Lady of Lourdes. To assist the Parish with gardening is to care for the spiritual aspect of God’s vineyard. Moreover, Our Lady of Lourdes needs additional liturgical senior servers. We are grateful to the few who have served over many years. The more ministers we have, the less burden for those who already volunteer.

Have a great weekend

Fr Joe

First Reading Deut 30:10-14

Moses said to the people: ‘Obey the voice of the Lord your God, keeping those commandments and laws of his that are written in the Book of this Law, and you shall return to the Lord your God with all your heart and soul. ‘For this Law that I enjoin on you today is not beyond your strength or beyond your reach. It is not in heaven, so that you need to wonder, “Who will go up to heaven for us and bring it down to us, so that we may hear it and keep it?” Nor is it beyond the seas, so that you need to wonder, “Who will cross the seas for us and bring it back to us, so that we may hear it and keep it?” No, the Word is very near to you, it is in your mouth and in your heart for your observance.’

    1. This is my prayer to you, my prayer for your favour. Inyour great love, answer me, O God, with your help that never fails: Lord, answer, for your love is kind; in your compassion, turn towards me.  (R.)

Second Reading Col 1:15-20

Christ Jesus is the image of the unseen God

and the first-born of all creation, for in him were created all things in heaven and on earth: everything visible and everything invisible, Thrones, Dominations, Sovereignties, Powers – all things were created through him and for him.

Before anything was created, he existed, and he holds all things in unity. Now the Church is his body, he is its head. As he is the Beginning, he was first to be born from the dead, so that he should be first in every way; because God wanted all perfection to be found in him and all things to be reconciled through him and for him, everything in heaven and everything on earth, when he made peace by his death on the cross.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!
Your words, Lord, are spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life.
Alleluia!

Gospel Lk 10:25-37

There was a lawyer who, to disconcert Jesus, stood up and said to him, ‘Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘What is written in the Law? What do you read there?’ He replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.’ ‘You have answered right,’ said Jesus, ‘do this and life is yours.’

But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ Jesus replied, ‘A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of brigands; they took all he had, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead. Now a priest happened to be travelling down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan traveller who came upon him was moved with compassion when he saw him. He went up and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him on to his own mount, carried him to the inn and looked after him. Next day, he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper. “Look after him,” he said, “and on my way back I will make good any extra expense you have.” Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fell into the brigands’ hands?’ ‘The one who took pity on him,’ he replied. Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do the same yourself.’

Communion Antiphon

The sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for her young: by your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are they who dwell in your house, for ever singing your praise.

Call for Lawn Mower Volunteers

Our parish is a spiritual home for all of us.

As you are aware, the financial position of our parish is very stretched.

https://www.parishshare.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/bulletin-20250711-2153-parish-of-baulkham-hills-02.png

Given the expected increase in expenses, we need to make savings to remain sustainable.

Currently, we spend around 35K annually for the maintenance of the green space.

Hence, I call for volunteers to help us with the maintenance of our green area for St Michael’s and Our Lady of Lourdes.

If you wish to volunteer, please contact the parish office admin@parishofbaulkhamhills.org.au.

Thank you and God bless Fr Joe

Altar servers play a vital role in parish liturgy by assisting the priest during Mass and other services, enhancing the reverence and beauty of the celebration. They help facilitate the smooth flow of the Mass, allowing the priest to focus on leading the congregation in prayer. Their actions, such as carrying the cross and candles, presenting the gifts, and ringing the bells, contribute to a more prayerful and engaging experience for the entire assembly.

Would you please consider to join the Team of altar servers at Our Lady of Lourdes?

STAY FOR A CUPPA!

All are welcome to stay for morning tea after 10am mass SUNDAY 13th July. Come and have a cuppa and a chat.

https://www.parishshare.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Bulletin-–-20250620-–-2153-–-Parish-of-Baulkham-Hills-03.png

ALPHA is an 11-week program where each week we come together on a Wednesday evening to explore a topic tied to the core beliefs of our Faith.

It is not a bible study nor an unpacking of the catechesis. We share a meal, (provided each week by our fabulous catering team), watch a video and have a chat about the things you bring to the table. In other words, we discuss the things that you have been curious about and answer questions you have about our faith. ALPHA is a very enjoyable experience that simply brings people together to explore, connect, share, and enhance our Faith.
