The Bible speaks of the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit. When he came, it was Pentecost. Where he comes, there is Pentecost. But what is this Holy Spirit? Can you touch it? Can you see it, or at least feel it? We all know that and have a 7th sense for it. When you enter a room full of people and hear them talking to each other, you somehow sense whether it’s good here or not. You sense something of the spirit that dwells here, even if you might not call it that. It speaks of the spirit of money, the spirit of power, the spirit of capitalism, etc. What does the Bible mean when it speaks of the Spirit of God? What kind of spirit is this? The Bible tells stories about it. It tells what it’s like when people come into contact with this spirit, when it comes over them. Ruach – that’s the Hebrew word for our word spirit. At the beginning of the Bible, it tells how God breathed the Ruach into man’s nostrils, and thus man became alive. So this Holy Spirit is a spirit that gives life. Wonderful. Elijah, a great prophet of his time, wanted to see God, and he saw him not in mighty natural events but in a gentle rushing. The word “spirit” appears here, too. This Holy Spirit does not come spectacularly, not in the wake of volcanic eruptions and roaring waves. He comes quietly; he is suddenly there. The disciples of Jesus, as we heard earlier, were crouching together, full of fear and discouragement (caught in a kind of spirit of fear!), and suddenly this spirit of life came over them, and their fear was gone. They gained courage and began to tell people about what they had experienced. That is what the Holy Spirit who comes from God is like: creative, lively, quiet, encouraging.
What more could one wish than for us all to feel this living, quiet, encouraging spirit? But often enough, it’s not there. Our time, some say, is spiritless. It revolves only around material things, commerce, careers. And then what? Some say that this ancient Holy Spirit of life, which our ancestors still felt, has departed, emigrated. But where to? And what are we left with? Some say that our lives have become so fast-paced that there’s hardly any time for this spirit that wants to come.
Sometimes one gets the impression that behind the excessive hectic pace of our activities lies a mistrust of God’s power. And behind the proliferation of our works lies a weakening of our faith, as we ultimately rely only on what we ourselves accomplish and achieve. But we are effective not only through what we do, but also no less through who we are when we become mature, free, and true by keeping the roots of our being in the fruitful silence of God.
The Bible, especially the evangelist John, tells us that this spirit of life is comforting. He tells us that life is a coming and going, a beginning and an ending, and that this spirit of consolation is with us. Whether that is security, I don’t know, but it can become the certainty that we are not alone. That is what the disciples experienced, too. Their master, with whom they had experienced so many good things, was gone – and what was left behind? The spirit of consolation, which guides them in the truth. That is the experience they had. The Holy Spirit of life, who had, so to speak, taken up residence in this Jesus of Nazareth, came back and stayed with them: alive, quiet, and encouraging.
The Holy Spirit overcomes fear. Let us step forward, fearlessly, and proclaim the message of Christ Crucified, without fear, knowing we are in the hands of the Strong.

The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world and that which contains all things understands what is said, alleluia.
When Pentecost day came round, the apostles had all met in one room, when suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind from heaven, the noise of which filled the entire house in which they were sitting; and something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech.
Now there were devout men living in Jerusalem from every nation under heaven, and at this sound they all assembled, each one bewildered to hear these men speaking his own language. They were amazed and astonished. ‘Surely’ they said ‘all these men speaking are Galileans? How does it happen that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; people from Mesopotamia, Judaea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya round Cyrene; as well as visitors from Rome – Jews and proselytes alike – Cretans and Arabs; we hear them preaching in our own language about the marvels of God.’
People who are interested only in unspiritual things can never be pleasing to God. Your interests, however, are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, since the Spirit of God has made his home in you. In fact, unless you possessed the Spirit of Christ you would not belong to him. Though your body may be dead it is because of sin, but if Christ is in you then your spirit is life itself because you have been justified; and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.
So then, my brothers, there is no necessity for us to obey our unspiritual selves or to live unspiritual lives. If you do live in that way, you are doomed to die; but if by the Spirit you put an end to the misdeeds of the body you will live.
Everyone moved by the Spirit is a son of God. The spirit you received is not the spirit of slaves bringing fear into your lives again; it is the spirit of sons, and it makes us cry out, ‘Abba, Father!’ The Spirit himself and our spirit bear united witness that we are children of God. And if we are children we are heirs as well: heirs of God and coheirs with Christ, sharing his sufferings so as to share his glory.
Holy Spirit, Lord of light,
From the clear celestial height
Thy pure beaming radiance give.
Come, thou Father of the poor,
Come with treasures which endure;
Come, thou light of all that live!
Thou, of all consolers best,
Thou, the soul’s delightful guest,
Dost refreshing peace bestow;
Thou in toil art comfort sweet;
Pleasant coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.
Light immortal, light divine,
Visit thou these hearts of thine,
And our inmost being fill:
If thou take thy grace away,
Nothing pure in man will stay;
All his good is turned to ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour thy dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:
Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.
Thou, on us who evermore
Thee confess and thee adore,
With thy sevenfold gifts descend:
Give us comfort when we die;
Give us life with thee on high;
Give us joys that never end.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Alleluia!
Gospel Jn 14:15-16, 23-26
Jesus said to his disciples
‘If you love me you will keep my commandments.
I shall ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you for ever.
If anyone loves me he will keep my word,
and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home with him.
Those who do not love me do not keep my words. And my word is not my own;
it is the word of the one who sent me.
I have said these things to you while still with you;
but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything
and remind you of all that I have said to you.’
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke of the marvels of God, alleluia.

Homelessness is never a choice. Young sisters Abigail and Isabella* have never known a stable, safe and loving home. All they have known is a life of instability, neglect and abuse. A life of constant moves, and periods of homelessness, including times living in a cold and crowded caravan or their mother’s car.
As children, they had no choice in their situation and no one to turn to. Now, as young adults, they finally have the chance to break free from the impacts of homelessness to create a stable and caring home of their own. With your help and support, they can look forward to a brighter future that’s full of possibility they could never imagine before.
