Dear friends,
Warm greetings from Berlin, where the pilgrim group will be staying for two days before continuing to Poland. Anne Sullivan, Laszlo, Yvette, Anne Mendes, and Eulogio are joining us from our parish. The rest are from Glenbrook, my former parish.
In addition to the tourist activities, we also celebrate Holy Mass daily, during which we also pray for the parishioners. Fortunately, the weather was very good, and we also enjoyed culinary delicacies, such as sausages in the morning, sausages at lunch, and sausages in the evening, and beer at any time of day.
Many were surprised that I speak German very well.
Here in Germany, many are also surprised by the election of the new pope, even though many Germans welcome it. They hope that Leo XIV will continue Francis’s course.
Contrary to the media, however, I was not surprised by the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as successor of St Peter. I know “Bob” very well.
He came from a family deeply rooted in the Catholic faith. His parents, Louis and Mildred, were active in the parish and also helped many priests and religious. He studied mathematics and philosophy before joining the Augustinian order in 1977.
During his tenure as Prior General of the Augustinians, I served him as Secretary General and Finance Director of the “AUGUSTINIANUM”, where the Augustinian headquarter is located in Rome. I was very impressed by his calm and listening style of leadership. He has a natural gift for solving complicated problems without being intrusive. I experienced “Bob” as a spiritual and deeply faithful confriar. In many meetings, “Bob” has shown himself to be someone who seeks connection and unity. He is a true pastor and bridge-builder. As Pope, he wants to build bridges that will enable lasting peace in the Church and between the warring parties.
His devotion to the poor and disadvantaged is also impressive. He served as Bishop of one of poorest dioceses in Peru before becoming a Cardinal and then Pope.
As a member of religious order, Leo XIV stands for continuity. This was evident in the speech he gave on the evening of his election, which strongly emphasized his solidarity with Francis. At the same time, he wore the red mozzetta that the late Pontiff Benedict XVI also wore at his inauguration as pope. In doing so, Leo XIV underscored the importance of the tradition of the Catholic Church.
So let us pray for Pope Leo that he may carry out his ministry with wisdom, love, and faith.
Have a wonderful week ahead Fr Joe
Dear Sisters and Brothers of the Diocese of Parramatta,
I am writing to you all to let you know that I have convened a conference to be held for all our clergy (both priests and deacons) on the Central Coast commencing on the evening of Tuesday 20 May 2025 and concluding on Friday 23 May 2025 in the morning.
The last time that the clergy of the Diocese held a residential conference was in May 2016 before I was installed as the 4th Bishop of Parramatta. Thus, it has almost been ten years since the clergy have had an opportunity to be together for any meaningful time.
Much has happened since I came to the Diocese, not least being our Diocesan Synod and our new Pastoral Plan that emerged from the Synod. The clergy of the Diocese need time to be together to assist the building up of their fraternal relationships, and for some much-needed input on topics that are very relevant to parish clergy ministering in the context of our current world.
That means that for three days the normal liturgical schedules in our parishes will be disrupted. However, with the assistance of some retired priests and some priests from religious congregations Mass will be available at six major churches in the Diocese for those who wish to attend daily Mass from Wed 21 May – 23 May 2025.
I would encourage those who normally attend daily Mass and cannot access one of the proposed centres where Mass will be celebrated to still gather in the parish church and pray especially for the clergy of the Diocese during their time away.
Yours Sincerely in Christ
Most Reverend Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFM Conv STL DD Bishop of Parramatta
On 12 May, Zac was commissioned as acolyte by Bishop Vincent during a solemn Mass at the Cathedral in Parramatta. He will now serve regularly at Our Lady of Lourdes.
We are very proud of him and wish him God’s blessing for his ministry as an acolyte.
We also thank those who have accompanied Zac on his journey.
Perhaps there may still other young parishioners who would like to embark on the journey to become a liturgical minister.

O sing a new song to the Lord, for he has worked wonders; in the sight of the nations he has shown his deliverance, alleluia.
Acts 14:21-27 Paul and Barnabas went back through Lystra and Iconium to Antioch. They put fresh heart into the
disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the
faith. ‘We all have to experience many hardships’ they said ‘before we enter the kingdom of God.’ In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended them to the Lord in whom they had come to believe.
They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had originally been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.
On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the pagans.
I will praise your name for ever, my king and my
Rev 21:1-5 I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth; the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared
now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the
holy city, and the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, as beautiful as a bride all dressed for her husband. Then I heard a loud voice call from the throne, ‘You see this city? Here God lives among men. He will make his home among
them; they shall be his people, and he will be their God; his name is God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes; there will be no more death, and no more mourning or sadness. The world of the past has gone.’
Then the One sitting on the throne spoke: ‘Now I am making the whole of creation new.’
Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia!
I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you.
Alleluia!
When Judas had gone Jesus said:
‘Now has the Son of Man been glorified, and in him God has been glorified.
If God has been glorified in him,
God will in turn glorify him in himself, and will glorify him very soon.
My little children,
I shall not be with you much longer. I give you a new commandment:
love one another;
just as I have loved you,
you also must love one another.
By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.’
I am the true vine and you are the branches, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, bears fruit in plenty, alleluia.
