The gospel gives us much to ponder on. It revolves, no less so, around the essential question of salvation. How can one be saved? In essence, Luke 13:22-30 teaches that salvation is not automatic or a result of privilege but requires a genuine commitment to following Jesus and entering a life of faith and obedience. Jesus responds by urging his listeners to “strive to enter through the narrow door”. This “narrow door” symbolizes the path of faith and discipleship, which requires effort and commitment. Our English word “narrow” comes from the Greek word thlibo, which has much to do with persecution and trouble in this context. For Jesus’ disciples, that meant they would encounter hostility from Israel’s leaders and their community members, who might misunderstand why they lived the way they did.
Similarly, for us today, taking the narrow path may at times cause friction in our relationships or other comparable challenges. People may not understand why we live the way we do, and such misunderstandings often result in relational and other suffering.
We can enter through the narrow gate, as Jesus did, and trust his directive for life—his good yoke. Following his narrow path is a weighty challenge and requires a willingness to suffer. And yet, he crafts his yoke with love and light. It is reasonable and not burdensome; it enlivens us.
“Narrow is the path that leads to life,” Jesus says, and this path will eventually guide us to God’s renewed creation, to true shalom. We follow the narrow path to life because we do not want to harm anyone, but rather we want everyone to be saved and thus discover the peace of God for themselves.
From the peace of God, we return to our parish life. This week, there is much to report. The organization of our parish fete is progressing well. Last week we started pre-selling the tickets. For the first week, things are going well but it could be better. For our two schools and communities in our parish, we want to sell a total of 2,000 raffle ticket booklets. Given the wonderful prizes, it should be possible to sell them if you all participate in this pre-sale process. Perhaps you can help us sell the booklets. Would it be possible for each of you to take five booklets and encourage your friends and relatives to buy them? If we all work together, we can achieve great things.
Many volunteers in our parish also do great things. I’d like to highlight our church cleaning and flowers ministry this week. Every week, they do an extra shift after their regular work to keep the church clean for all of us and to help our parish saving for important maintenance works. I am also very pleased that a group of Patrician Brothers college teachers have sacrificed their time to ensure cleanliness at Our Lady of Lourdes. Under the guidance of Anthony Pope, also a parish pastoral council member, they worked last Friday from 9am to 12pm in the garden, in the church and in the parish house as part of their spirituality day. Thank you all for your help.
At a parish pastoral council meeting, we discussed the possibility of the assistant priest living in OLOL house again. The diocesan leadership would also welcome this opportunity. As a parish priest, I believe that this step makes pastoral sense, because it would ensure permanent pastoral and spiritual accompaniment on site. We are thinking that the back part of the house can be easily converted into a two-room apartment, while the front part can be used as a morning tea space as well as for other parish functions. To do this, we have to relocate the archive and demolish the walls and transform the front part into an open space. Then we need to install a small kitchen that can be used for morning tea. We also need to reposition the electricals. I have already commissioned Daniel Johnson, a parishioner, with the planning and am waiting for the cost estimate.
The renovation of the old church is also making good progress. We now have a working group (Sharen Sordo, Daniel Johnson, and Chris Worthington) that is currently preparing a project description for Shire Council to approve. This step is essential. We hope that we won’t encounter any problems with the renovation. After that, we will create a priority list of works that are essential. Then we will put the works out to tender.
To cover costs, we continue to sell brass plaques with family names, which we then place in the old church. This way, the names will be forever preserved in the prayers of the people. If you would like to purchase a plaque, please contact the parish office.
Have a wonderful weekend
Fr Joe

SUPPORT DONATIONS
We really appreciate your continued support.
Please follow the donation details provided on official website:
Turn your ear, O Lord, and answer me; save the servant who trusts in you, my God. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I cry to you all the day long.
The Lord says this: I am coming to gather the nations of every language. They shall come to witness my glory. I will give them a sign and send some of their survivors to the nations: to Tarshish, Put, Lud, Moshech, Rosh, Tubal, and Javan, to the distant islands that have never heard of me or seen my glory. They will proclaim my glory to the nations. As an offering to the Lord they will bring all your brothers, on horses, in chariots, in litters, on mules, on dromedaries, from all the nations to my holy mountain in Jerusalem, says the Lord, like Israelites bringing oblations in clean vessels to the Temple of the Lord. And of some of them I will make priests and Levites, says the Lord.
Have you forgotten that encouraging text in which you are addressed as sons? My son, when the Lord corrects you, do not treat it lightly; but do not get discouraged when he reprimands you. For the Lord trains the ones
that he loves and he punishes all those that he acknowledges as his sons. Suffering is part of your training; God is treating you as his sons. Has there ever been any son whose father did not train him? Of course, any punishment is most painful at the time, and far from pleasant; but later, in those on whom it has been used, it bears fruit in peace and goodness. So hold up your limp arms and steady your trembling knees and smooth out the path you tread; then the injured limb will not be wrenched, it will grow strong again.
Alleluia, alleluia!
I am the way, the truth, and the life,
says the Lord; no one comes to the Father, except through me.
Alleluia!
Through towns and villages Jesus went teaching, making his way to Jerusalem. Someone said to him, ‘Sir, will there be only a few saved?’ He said to them, ‘Try your best to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many will try to enter and will not succeed.
‘Once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you may find yourself knocking on the door, saying, “Lord, open to us” but he will answer, “I do not know where you come from.” Then you will find yourself saying, “We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets” but he will reply, “I do not know where you come from. Away from me, all you wicked men!”
Then there will be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves turned outside. And men from east and west, from north and south, will come to take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God.
‘Yes, there are those now last who will be first, and those now first who will be last.’
The earth is replete with the fruits of your work, O Lord; you bring forth bread from the earth and wine to cheer the heart.
Sirach 3:17-20, 28-29; Heb 12:18-19, 22-24; Lk 14:1, 7-14
